I will give high praise to the Law Practice Exchange very readily and without hesitation.
I have recommended it to colleagues who expressed interest in selling their practice.
I'm very active in the Pennsylvania Bar's Solo and Small Firm Section and their listserv.
Whenever someone mentions possibly exiting their practice or retiring, I always recommend contacting
the Law Practice Exchange. It’s been an incredibly positive experience for me, and I can’t imagine it
wouldn’t be for anyone else looking to sell their practice, retire, go part-time, or explore merging
with another firm.
When I first reached out to the Law Practice Exchange and Tom Lenfestey, my firm consisted of six
attorneys, all female. We were fully virtual, working remotely, with no hard assets involved. We
exclusively represented franchisees nationwide, making us a niche practice, fairly unique and
specialized. That added a bit of a challenge in finding someone who would be the right fit for the practice.
The valuation process was also interesting. I’m not a particularly data-driven person. As I mentioned,
we had no paralegals, no support staff, and very few physical assets. I didn’t track much beyond what my
accountant and bookkeeper maintained in QuickBooks. So while I had a good sense of revenues and expenses,
there was additional information needed that I hadn’t been regularly tracking. It was time-consuming,
but absolutely worth it.
Tom made the process of selling and buying, on both ends, very pleasant and easy. He never pressured me.
He understood what my practice was about, and I think that’s probably the most valuable thing I can say.
